IRS Disputes/Tax Litigation

Our objective in every tax controversy engagement is to resolve issues quickly, efficiently, at the earliest stage and, if possible, without litigation.  Our experienced attorneys represent individuals and entities through tax examinations and trust fund liability investigations.  We are there throughout the entire process, including meeting with IRS agents, group managers and appeals officers.

In the event the IRS is attempting to collect taxes owed, we represent clients in filing tax refund actions, negotiating offers in compromise (based on doubt as to collectability and liability) and in entering into installment payment agreements.

Our Tax Group has represented taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service at the audit and appeal levels and has assisted clients at the audit level before the Ohio Department of Taxation and with local tax authorities.  Their broad knowledge in the tax field helps us understand the tremendous impact these cases can have on our clients’ businesses and lives.

Like-Kind Exchanges/1031 Tax Deferred Transactions

Our attorneys have extensive experience in representing clients in the sale of an investment or business property and the subsequent reinvestment of the proceeds in like-kind (similar) property.  Section 1031 of the Internal Revenue Code allows individuals, in certain circumstances, to exchange the property with other like-kind property without causing or requiring the individual to recognize tax on the disposition of the property. The exchange of property can be simultaneous or deferred. Our office, in conjunction with our affiliated title companies, assists in ensuring that the appropriate exchange documents are executed and the proper requirements are met to successfully complete the exchange.
